2002 MICHIGAN CASH GRAIN FARM BUSINESS ANALYSIS SUMMARY AgEcon
Wittenberg, Eric; Schwab, Gerald.
This report summarizes the 2002 financial and production records of 78 Michigan cash grain farms. To be included, the farms must have produced at least 50 percent of gross cash farm income from one or a combination of these items; corn, soybeans, wheat, all varieties of navy beans, oats, and other small grains. The records came from Michigan State University's TelFarm/MicroTel project, the Farm Credit Service system, or by AgriSolutions in Michigan. The values were pooled into averages for reporting purposes. Farm records were included if a farm financial analysis was completed on 2002 data including beginning and ending balance sheets, plus income and expenses. The data were checked to verify that cash discrepancy was less than 10% of gross cash inflow...

2002 MICHIGAN SWINE (FARROW TO FINISH) BUSINESS ANALYSIS SUMMARY AgEcon
Schwab, Gerald; Wittenberg, Eric.
This report summarizes the financial and production records of 7 Michigan swine farms, farrow to finish. To be included, the farms must have produced at least 50 percent of gross cash farm income from one or a combination of fat hogs, feeder pigs and cull breeding hogs sales. The records came from Michigan State University's TelFarm/MicroTel project, the Farm Credit Service system, or by AgriSolutions in Michigan. The values were pooled into averages for reporting purposes. Farm records were included if a farm financial summary was completed on 2002 data including beginning and ending balance sheets, plus income and expenses. The data were checked to verify that cash discrepancy was less than 10% of gross cash inflow and that debt discrepancy was less...

A STOCHASTIC DOMINANCE ANALYSIS OF ALTERNATIVE SUGAR BEET- AND NAVY BEAN- BASED CROP ROTATIONS IN MICHIGAN AgEcon
Gebremedhin, Berhanu; Schwab, Gerald; Harwood, Richard R.; Christenson, Donald; Bricker, Calvin.
Sugar beets (Beta vulgaris L.) and navy beans (Phaseoulus vulgaris L.) have been important target crops in the crop rotation systems of many Michigan growers, particularly in the Saginaw Valley and the Thumb region. The recent decline in sugar beet yields combined with the erratic navy bean yields have led to concern about the optimal crop rotation for the East Central region in Michigan. Risk is an important consideration in a farmer's choice of cropping systems. This study uses 20 years of experimental data from the Michigan State University Saginaw Valley Research Farm to determine the risk efficiency of alternative sugar beet- and navy bean- based crop rotations that included corn (Zea mays L.), oats (Avena sativa L.), and alfalfa (Medicago sativa...

COMPLETING FINAN & NET WORTH STATEMENTS – SOME ISSUES AgEcon
Schwab, Gerald; Betz, Roger; Wittenberg, Eric.
We welcome all Michigan State University Extension (MSU-E) agents embarking upon a journey to improve the accuracy and usefulness of Michigan farm record data. We believe that analysis of accurate farm records will enable the farm owner/operator(s) to use his/her (their) farm records as a diagnostic tool that in turn can provide a benchmark for planning. We do recognize that this activity requires a time commitment from the MSU-E agent and also a willingness to bear some responsibility in improving the accuracy and consistency of the farm record database. It is to this problem of farm record consistency that this paper is addressed.

CONTRACT FINISHING FOR NEW ENTRANTS IN PORK PRODUCTION AgEcon
Martin, Laura L.; Rozeboom, Dale; Schwab, Gerald.
The pork production industry is a far different industry today than it was fifty, twenty, or even five years ago. On diversified Midwestern farms during the mid-to-late 20th century, the swine enterprise was labeled "the mortgage lifter". The hogs added value to home-produced feedstuffs such as corn and increased the income from a given acreage base. As farm mechanization and technology rapidly developed, farms became larger and less diversified as livestock disappeared from many farmsteads. In this paper, we address the question whether swine units can be introduced to non-livestock farms via a coordinated agreement for the grower-finisher phase and make these farms more profitable. To do this, we first describe some of the changes that have taken...

REGIONAL COMPETITIVE POSITION OF PORK INDUSTRY AgEcon
Adhikari, Bishwa B.; Harsh, Stephen B.; Schwab, Gerald.
In the recent past U.S. pork industry experienced geographical shifts in its production and processing. Some geographical areas have competitive advantages over the areas in raising pigs. Costs of raising pigs vary by type and size of operations, and other location specific factors. We used enterprise budgeting approach to estimate the profitability of representative feeder to finishing operations in different geographical regions in U.S. We obtained data from the United States Department of Agriculture databases, costs and returns survey and various university sources. The cost differences were not due to the unit prices of inputs but were largely driven by the differences in their efficiencies. Overhead costs varies by locations and size of...

THE ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE OF CROP ROTATION SYSTEMS: EVIDENCE FROM THE LITERATURE AgEcon
Gebremedhin, Berhanu; Schwab, Gerald.
Agricultural sustainability requires that the individual farm firm be competitive and profitable while simultaneously enhancing environmental quality and the natural resource base upon which the farm firm and agricultural economy depends. The reliance of conventional agriculture systems on purchased inputs external to the firm presents possible challenges to the long-term sustainability of the system. Crop rotation systems are one cropping system alternative that can reduce agriculture's dependence on external inputs through internal nutrient recycling, maintenance of the long-term productivity of the land, and breaking weed and disease cycles. Decision criteria to choose among competing crop rotation systems can include impact on soil quality and...
